CDOM

CDOM or Chromophoric/Coloured Organic Matter exists in many forms from naturally occurring DOM to secretions from organisms. CDOM is important as it represents a source of carbon which can participate in reactions within the water as well as become accessible for organisms as an energy source. CDOM can also degrade within the water potentially producing volatile compounds which can be harmful to aquatic life.
Raw CDOM detection can help detect and explain changes in primary productivity, changes to phytoplankton, algal blooming and other environmental changes. Going even further, CDOM can be used with other parameters to provide readings for DOC and TOC in real-time, as the CDOM peak C is closely related to fulvic acids, which are a product of decomposition of material.
